Self Portrait Artwork created with iPhone and iPad. Being female, aging, woman, in US culture, is a challenge. As we age women are expected to take less and less of an allowed presence. We are relegated to granny, old woman, invisible, shrinking, softening form. We are assumed to be a mere portion of our full self. We must, if we want to be seen fully, set into a battle for control of our own opinion and our own body. In “Portrait of a Woman” I declare ownership of self and space. I declare my experience valid, strong and bold. I assert the person I am and the iconic figure I become in asserting my place.
I am now seer, knower of the world. I am- one who envisions, experiences, feels, tells all. I take a rightful place in the world of knowing and experience. I am she who speaks her truth. I am one who others look to for understanding and inspiration. I am: She who is in alliance with forest, flora, river, leaf, mountain, city, water, animal, insect, bird, all living.
